Let’s be clear about one thing, while Cocos Island seems unusual for its abundance of fish and sharks, most of the world’s oceans would probably look like this if it weren’t for over-fishing by humans.

There are really only a handful of places in the world that are too remote for constant pillage by the trawlers, and those tend to have an abundance of large predators and pelagics.

Costa Rica is lucky to have Cocos Island, but it’s constantly under threat by fish poachers. Read more about that here: Illegal Fishing at Cocos Island.

Getting to Cocos

The only way to the island is a liveaboard trip from Puntarenas, with about 36 hours of open ocean each way. These are the four boats.
